Special Conservation Issue of Just Paint
The next issue of ‘Just Paint’ (#15) is about to hit your newsstands in Mid September. The issue is almost completely devoted to the topic of conservation of acrylic coatings and paintings. We were so delighted that Dr. Alison Murray of Queen’s University, Dr. Tom Learner of The Tate, Dr. Gregory Smith of Buffalo State University could join our Technical Director, Jim Hayes to discuss the issues surrounding the new research that has focused on the cleaning of the acrylic paint surface. Also included in this issue is an artist’s summary of the paper presented by Greg and Jim during the symposium “Modern Paints Uncovered” held at The Tate this past May. We are delighted to be able to participate in moving forward the body of knowledge in our field.
I realize that our ‘Just Paint’ newsletter is not a “how-to” manual for painters. I have always felt comfortable that our role is to share our technical knowledge of materials and to simply avoid telling artists how to paint. I am not a painter, and although we have many artists within our company, it is not our role to educate painters in anything other than the tools of their art. As my dad shared many times with me… “we are tool makers”. As such we have a responsibility to make the best tools we can and to back them up with solid information and a commitment to the quality of our work.
‘Just Paint’ is our effort to share with the arts community with the most current information related to the “best practices” using art materials. I don’t think it will ever be on the best selling list, yet the body of work created in our 15 issues of ‘Just Paint’ contain some of the most complete and detailed technical information ever compiled on the subject of acrylic paints for artists. So if we fault sometimes on being over technical, please note that there are people here sitting at their desks, manning our technical support area that are more than happy to translate the information meaningfully for your own work.

Hello from New Zealand. I have only recently found this website and have not previously heard of your newsletter. Is this likely to become something we can recieve free over the net, like Robert Genn’s?
It would be really great if it is. I am a full time artist and also teach specialising in landscape and am keen to both use and advise my students with the best knowledge available.

Thanks so much for the heads up on Robert Genn. I’ve personally not been aware of it, but have spent some time visiting now. Great information and great postings from other artists!
You have stumped all of us here. Can I ask what is “teaching specialising in landscapes”? We’ve invented several notions of what it might be up here but we do realize that in making paint in rural upstate New York we might have missed some very important new techniques or art movements. I was just at an art show and wanted to purchase an acrylic painting. The artist did not gesso his canvas before painting with golden paints. He did put an under coat of a dark tone. Would this painting be archival?

Oh goodness. My appologies! This was ages ago and someone else found it and told me about it. Around this time i was given the opportunity to hold my first ever solo exhibition at a community gallery that promotes emerging artists. The exhibitioin opened on the 8th of March and is on until the 1st of April, so you can imagine doing enough work for a solo in that time frame was a pretty big call. Many of the new ones are now on my website also.
I did laugh about specialising…the word was ‘specializing’. I can imagine you had fun with it. Thanks for your reply and after Easter I may have a little more time to check out great sites and information articles.
