This lesser known Art movement started in Italy in the 1960's. Artists were rejecting traditional painting and using common items creating assemblage, sculpture and paintings with items like dirt, rocks, paper, clothing and rope. Their mission? To reconnect Art and Life. I’m convinced this is where the recycled and repurposed art that we see so much of today began with this small group of artists. In this class you'll get a little art history and then we'll make our own Arté Povera assemblage painting piece using acrylics, twig bundles, old postage stamps and Italian papers Materials Fee $25 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes: cradled wood panel, an Arte Povera class kit with various “poverty art” assemblage supplies- kits are unique and may include any combination of flattened bottle caps, items from nature, twigs, used postage stamps, birch tree skin, fabric, shredded money, quilling paper, string, leather and metal scrap, wine cork slices, Italian book pages, beads and more. Supplies Needed to bring for Class: Soft Gel Medium and a stronger adhesive- heavy gel or tacky glue Favorite acrylics set and brushes, palette knife Your favorite collage papers and any interesting items you have been squirreling away for a special project. Water container A second substrate- canvas, wood panel, wooden box lid or anything you already have in any size is fine Feel free to email if you have questions Susan.Rossiter@yahoo.com

Saturday, December 10, 2022 12:00 PM 3:00 PM Zoom live from my studio (map) $45 Discover Artist Trading Cards! Artists have been trading art for many years- but in 1997 a Swiss artist M. Vanci Stirnemann began what he called “Collaborative Cultural Performance”. He created many small pieces and held trading sessions for artists to exchange cards. ATC exchanges have really evolved over the years… The previous exchanges had a great turnout from all over the world from beginner to professional artists with diverse art backgrounds. I’m so happy to be scheduling the 3rd annual ATC Exchange and hope you will join us. The workshop will cover a little history of Artist Trading Cards as well as some different approaches to making them. I’ll show and demonstrate my creative process and favorite products. How does it work? if there are 20 people in the class, we’ll each make 20+ small pieces. I’ll give everyone a few weeks to finish them up and get them in the mail to me. Once they all arrive- I’ll divide them up and send all of you a little masterpiece from each of your classmates- including me. I’ve participated in several trades in person and through the mail and it’s really fun to get a package with 20 little paintings or collages! You can pick one thing to make 20 times or make them all different. I’ll have a ton of examples from my own collection of “trades” from all over the world. I imagine this to be a fun, relaxed class to be remembered. Materials list: You’ll need all of your favorite art supplies- whatever you have and at least 20 blank ATC’s. 2 1/2”X3 1/2 inches. You can cut them out of 150 or 300lb watercolor paperor whatever you have that is heavy enough to support your preferred art supplies. There’s only one rule- no mod podge unless you put all of your ATC’s in indivdual plastic sleeves. Gel Medium is OK just be sure it’s thoroughly dried before you mail them or they’ll all stick together. I’ll be using various heavy white papers and BLICK has assortments already cut for you in packs of 10 and 12 for under $3. They also have little envelopes and plastic sleeves. Use your imagination- the sky is the limit! https://www.dickblick.com/items/09808-1009/ Assorted papers https://www.dickblick.com/items/10118-1001/ 300lb Watercolor paper **I’ll let everyone know the approximate headcount for the class a couple days before so you know if you need to cut or buy more cards to make. **When you mail your ATC’s to me, please also send a $5 bill to cover shipping and handling when I send the ATC’s back to you.
