Sun-Drenched in Watercolor Cactus
You’ll create a painting of cacti basking in the desert sun, with their deep green body exploding with vivid flowers in your choice of colors. A Rustic Barn in the Summer
Capture the beauty and charm of weathered buildings. Paint may fade and iron may rust, but the character of buildings strengthens with age. You will work on developing perspective in your buildings and in capturing the charm of these old barns with their weather wood and peeling paint. Numerous watercolor techniques will be employed as we paint this scene using Golden’s QoR watercolors and Silver Watercolor Brushes. Seashell in a Mosaic-Style with Watercolors & Masking Fluid
This unique way to portray a wide variety of shells is also a wonderful way to practice wet-into-wet watercolor techniques and blending. First, we’ll lightly draw our shell images, then we design the shells and their backgrounds with light applications of masking fluid using a unique process with a fine-line applicator. Nautilus SeaShell in a Mosaic Style
This unique way to portray a seashell is also a wonderful way to practice wet-into-wet watercolor techniques and blending. First, we’ll lightly draw our shell image, then we begin to design the shells and their backgrounds with light applications of masking fluid using a unique process with a fine-line applicator. This is a technique that ca be applied to many other subjects too. Sketches will be provided, so no drawing skills are required.

#5: Painting Techniques & Tips
We will explore an amazing variety of techniques including more in-depth wet-on-wet methods, wet-on-dry, dry brush, lifting out, scratching in, softening edges, glazing, back-runs, blossoms, blending, color washes, negative painting, spattering, sponge painting, scraping back with credit cards, palette knives, brush ends, a razor knife, sandpapers, and using a variety of unexpected items such as Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, rice, salt, masking tape, masking fluid, wax-paper, saran wrap & candles as resists and an atomizer for softness. We will be painting reference charts for all these techniques so you will remember them. Finally, you will discover how the watercolor that we love truly is magical but also controllable when you just think it all through.

Week #4: The Characteristics of your Paints & Mastering Water to Paint Ratios
Now we go into detail about the magical properties of the paint in your palette and practice color mixing using transparent, semi-transparent, opaque, staining, non-staining, granulating and sedimentary paints. As you learn the differences in all of these, you will paint numerous personalized reference charts that will be very helpful for all future painting projects. We’ll also study Golden’s QoR color charts to learn even more about the paints. Next, the big question of water will be covered, including how to control your water-to-paint ratios. Learn how to know if you are using enough or too much water. This is the fundamental lesson in why we love watercolors

Learn all about paints and how to select paint colors for your perfect personal artist palette. In class, we will be using Golden’s QoR watercolor paints. You will learn the reason to choose a warm and a cool of primary, how to choose colors for your painting that will look wonderful together, and which colors to choose and why. As you become acquainted with your beautiful paints you will learn their hues, values, temperature, and intensity as we cover the how and why of color combinations that make successful paintings. Master this class and you have 60% of watercolor painting down.

Week #2: Go Wild with Brushes & Alternate Watercolor Applications
Now we are ready to play with so many different types of brushes. We will be using Silver Brush Ltd. brushes as we practice. We’ll use rounds, flats, fans, filberts, mops, daggers, liners and lots of other specialized and unique brushes. As you practice using these, you’ll learn the proper wrist and hand techniques to get the desired and proper brush strokes for many different styles of paintings. Each brush has its personality and you will learn how to become “friends” with each one as you experiment with them in this fun hands-on class. We will also explore Watercolor Sticks, Watercolor Markers, Watercolor Pencils, Watercolor Inks, Liquid Watercolors, Brusho Watercolor powders and Watercolor Filled Spray Bottles.
