Everyone loves birds! Simple shapes and bold colors are what we focus on when learning how to collage songbirds and blooms. I will teach you how to transfer a sketch from your reference photo, create a comprehensive underpainting with shading and a background, how to gel print your own papers, and how to apply collage! At the end of this three day workshop, you will have the skills and confidence to create your own Paper Painting! This workshop is a comprehensive class in which students are taught a unique figurative collage technique. Emphasis will be on developing form using light, shadow, and directional ripping– very similar to traditional painting techniques. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting experience would be helpful, but not imperative.

A comprehensive workshop that will take you through the collage process step-by-step. We will begin with technique to transfer your Old Irish Goat reference image to the substrate, then we will paint with acrylic to establish shading and fun color. Then, using the gel plate, we will create our own collage paper palette which will be torn into tidbits and applied on top of the under-painting to create an impressionistic, painterly collage. Essence of Mulranny Arts, located at our Old Convent Campus, offers a variety of workshops, classes and art retreats for groups of six to 12 students. Mulranny is a small seaside village on Clew Bay in Co. Mayo. It is located at the dramatic western edge of Ireland, the end boundary of Europe. Here, land and sea meet at the threshold of a powerful creative adventure. Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain, rises majestically from the sea on the opposite side of the bay. It is here that the ancients as well as the modern day pilgrims have climbed the steep path to the summit. You can see the small chapel’s reflective glint on the top. This is sheep and goat country and below the village they stand still as the tide comes in over their grazing patch on a salt marsh. They have learned to patiently stand and wait for the waters to recede so they can once again graze the salty grass. The rhythm of life here is dominated by these tides, flowing over the white sand beaches and then leaving in hasty withdrawal to the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Be inspired by beloved Mexican painter Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón aka Frida! You do NOT need to know how to draw faces, Elizabeth will teach you a photographic transfer technique that works like magic in order to start with a good proportional likeness. Portrait emphasis will be on creating an acrylic encaustic effect background, transferring your drawing directly from a photo print-out, and shading black pastel line-art by rubbing with your fingers. Add a fabulous floral crown inspired by fresh local flowers and hand-painted papers created in class through the gel printing process. Floral collage emphasis will be on utilizing gel printed papers to develop form through light and shadow. Hand painted papers will be glued down over a basic acrylic under-painting to create impressionistic painterly collaged florals for Frida’s crown or a bouquet. Paint your own collage papers, print local leaves, learn mark making, and more!

Location: Sedona Arts Center, Theatre Studio Based on her book of the same name, Elizabeth St. Hilaire will teach you how to achieve complex gel prints through layering. Learn to build layers with stencils over solid colored sheets with initial prints and ghost prints. Create pastel colors with layers of pattern that stay light in color. Combine stencil patterns with foam stamping, mark making, and texture. Add watery washes and spatter for even more pattern and color that soaks all the way through the sheet. Experiment with one pull prints where you build up multiple layers on the plate and pull them all at once. Enhance your prints with glitter or sparkly foil effects, the cherry on top! Elizabeth has been teaching gel printing for over 20 years and she still gets excited every time she pulls the paper off the plate! Come and learn in a fun environment where you are encouraged to ask questions and enjoy the process Consider taking Elizabeth’s follow up workshop NEW Funky Florals too! Click here to check it out!
